In 2002, the Caterpillar-TRD team will, for the first time, race with 2 Supertrucks in the European Truck Racing Cup 2002.
The first black Caterpillar-TRD, will be always drived by Harri Luostarinen, the Flying Finn, European Champion 1993, 1997 and 2000. The second driver is the Spanish Antonio Albacète, who drived a Man last year. This truck will be in red, the colours of Cepsa, the spanish sponsor of Albacète. The Caterpillar-TRD Team is working on the chassis in Great-Britain. The biggest change is to the geometry angles of the front axle to improve handling. The engine of the new Supertruck is always the good Caterpillar C12 ; but for this new season, the engine must have air restrictor, as for all super-trucks B in 2001. The American Caterpillar engineers estimated the restrictors will cost the team around 10% in terms of peak power output, but the Caterpillar-TRD team are confident they will still be very competitive as they expect to have in excess of 1400 horsepower! Antonio Albacète have drived during 5 seasons a cabover Man truck, and the biggest difficulty for him is to adopting the long noise of the Caterpillar. He had joked about it :"I'll have to remember to brake two metres sooner, or I may lose my nose!" Photos of the Caterpillar-TRD for the year 2002
